How to Make an Envelope Out of Wrapping Paper

Sometimes, the best gifts come in an envelope, whether they be concert tickets, gift cards or plain old cash. And sure, there are plenty of nice enough looking envelopes that you can buy to present the gift to your loved one, but if you want to make the presentation extra special, consider making an envelope out of wrapping paper. As you will see, it is actually a pretty simple process.

Step #1: Cut Your Wrapping Paper

Unroll your wrapping paper onto a flat surface and cut an 8x8 inch square – this is basically the size of a standard envelope, but if you have a much larger or smaller object, you can adjust the size as needed.

Step #2: Fold in Half

Fold the bottom edge of the paper over the top so that the two ends meet, and then make a crease with your hand. Now, you have a rectangle that’s 4 inches in length and 8 inches wide. Use tape to create seams on the left and right sides, all the way from top to bottom to secure what’s eventually going to be placed inside.

Step #3: Make Your Flap

Now, the only opening of the envelope is the top edge. Fold this opening downward about half an inch, with both edges of the sheets together, and create a crease by pressing along the fold firmly. Bend the back of the flap slightly to insert your gift into the envelope, and then fold the flap back over the gift and secure it with tape. You can also use glue or a sticker. Embellish as desired with a bow, ribbons or whatever will give the gift a personal touch. Once you’re done, check to make sure that the two seams on the sides are still completely sealed. If they’re not, reinforce with a little bit more tape.
